Play my newest game, Fuck That Noise!

discovergames:

Fuck That Noise, made in Twine for the One Game a Month challenge, is an interactive guide to deciding whether or not you should go to law school, and how to get there. Ok, really it is just a pissy little takedown of the whole process of applying for law school, but it takes the form of a guide.

For the record, I have now been accepted to a number of schools, and I am feeling much better about the whole thing, but I started writing this game when I was really hating the process, so that’s where the tone comes from.

I made this as catharsis and also to force myself to learn some of the style features of Twine that I did not utilize in my first Twine game. I was counting on fonts to get some of my points across, but then I found out that only a select few fonts are universal, which resulted in a lot of changes. But that’s the learning process, I guess. Criticisms are welcome and appreciated

Anyway, if you have a second, you can play the game in your browser by clicking the link above. When you make choices in the game, try to resist the urge to go backwards, as you’ll get some repeat content that way. And remember - there are many ways to lose, but you can win any time you want.

Fuck yeah Shawn.

Making it in Indie Games: Starter Guide

makegames:

image

Every now and then someone will ask me for advice on making it as a professional indie game developer. First, it’s a huge honor to be asked that. So I want to say “Thank you!” Second… damn, if I really want to help out it’s a serious endeavor. Of course, I could always say “Give it your best! Work hard! Be true to yourself!” and it wouldn’t be a terrible reply… just not a terribly useful one, either.

So here it is. Here is what I’m going to link when that rare situation arises again, because it’s too much work to write it up more than once! This is advice that I feel may actually be practical to someone who is just starting out as an indie game developer. Hope it helps!

Freeware Recommendations (Twine edition)

discovergames:

Often, I find free games that are good, but for whatever reason do not warrant a full review. They may be too short or too prone to spoilers to review separately, but are still interesting and worth a playthrough. Occasionally, I like to do these with a theme - all of today’s picks have been made with the simple text game making software Twine! All are playable in your browser, so check them out:

Hidden Maze City (Mike Leisz & Miles Simon) - Those who know my taste in games know I value interesting above almost all else, and interesting is what Mike Leisz does. He and Miles Simon created this game for Porpentine’s Big Chaos Twine Jam. Going above and beyond the typical text-only stuff that most people make with Twine, these guys added distorted pixelated visuals and electronic music loops. Many Twine games are good stories, but have no traditional game elements, and this game reverses that. There are legit branching paths and win/loss conditions, but the story is more a series of images than a cohesive narrative. Overall, this is one of my favorite Twines yet. (Plus, honestly, any game with a reference to Outkast’s “ATLiens” is clearly worth playing.)

Hidden Maze City, a Twine game I made with Miles Simon for Porpentine’s Big Chaos Jam, got some love recently on Discovergames.

Check out the full post HERE, which also highlights Footling Summer’s Body of the Moon and Gaming Pixie’s What’s in a Name.

Thanks for the kind words, Shawn!
